Tw: food mention/restricted medical diet/allergies.
So, while the complications from diverticulitis are still ongoing, I am happy to report that my MCAS seems much more stable. We've been making cupcakes again as a practice run (I'm baking for 20+ people this weekend at my niece's birthday party 😵), and today I had a whole quarter of a cupcake, and my throat is definitely not swelling anymore.
The only reason I didn't eat a whole one is because of my other stomach stuff. But it's been several hours now, and no hives, no swelling, no mouth burning, no tachycardia or migraines. Nadda. None of my usual MCAS symptoms.
Which, in theory, means I can plausibly put white rice and tapioca back into my diet because that's what the cupcakes are made out of. And let me tell you, I am vibrating with excitement at the thought of being able to eat rice again. Plus, a little bit of cake every now and then is nice too. It's been so long.
I pointed this out in a Discord server I'm in and thought Id share here:
Bob Iger announced that Disney is going to absorb Hulu, and Hulu will no longer exist next year. All shows will move to the Disney+ app.
Disney also announced they were going to remove shows and movies periodically from their streaming services.
I believe both of these moves are because of the Writers Strike.
Disney knows its going to lose the strike. There is too much public support. Specifically, the WGA is going to win writers getting more residuals from streaming.
So if Disney takes shows off of streaming, they dont have to pay the writers the residuals.
They are going to use excuses like "not enough funding for the server capacity" or "not enough views to warrent keeping the show". These are BULLSHIT. Its all greed. Its only GREED.
Pay attention to what happens in the following weeks.
This is similar to what happened with HBO - new owners merged two streaming services, and all of a sudden there wasn't enough server capacity for all the shows somehow. A total lie.
Download everything that isn't a major franchise. If its name isn't Marvel, Star Wars or The Simpsons, assume it's getting canned and get a copy in as high quality as you can store. Eventually your copy could be the only one.
This is the best AITA because on the actual matter at hand I'd say he's kinda right (ish), $4900 for a week of work is really good money and they can always celebrate later. He should have obviously talked it over with her first but still. What makes him an asshole (or just like, a really really weird person) is every other detail that is tangentially mentioned.
Honestly my advice is skip the merch and just try blackmailing me for incredible sums of money so that nobody im romantically involved with will ever see my posts
Fun fact: Harley was originally a one-off character/pseudo-walk on role that Paul Dini made for his friend Arleen Sorkin (Harley’s original VA). Harley is loosely based on Arleen, including her being Jewish. So this isn’t something that was added later by another writer, but rather an aspect of her that was part of her character since day one.
Not that it would make her any less Jewish if it was added later, of course, but I think it’s important to know how it was always part of her character, especially since a lot of folks don’t seem to realize she’s Jewish at all, let alone that she was from inception.
In moments like this I always fall back on the fact that they also aren’t speaking English because they don’t have England or the many languages and conquering peoples that contributed to the creation of the English language and therefore the work musr be a translation into recognizable terms in our world’s terms. Call that Tolkien Brainrot.
So I'm putting this here as a sort of public service. If you have never seen a rabid animal before, and you think you can handle watching it, I think it's a good idea to watch this. It's pretty upsetting to watch, so big CW on it, because this animal is essentially "dead but still moving." This is end-stage rabies. There is no saving this animal.
Before this stage, animals may be excessively affectionate or oddly tame-looking which is part of the reason why seeing people feeding foxes is upsetting to me. These animals might be, or might become, rabid, and there's no way to know without testing, which involves destroying the animal. Encouraging wild animals to be that close to humans is generally bad.
I grew up in the woods, so unfortunately we saw an uptick in rabid animals every spring -- you'd hear there was a rabid bat in this neighborhood or a rabid fox in this one -- but as wild animals and humans cross over more and more, we will see this more and more.
Opossums and squirrels extremely rarely get rabies, and we don't know why. They think the low body temperature of opossums inhibits the virus. The most common animals which get rabies in the US are raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes. Any animal 'acting unusually' -- not skittish around humans, biting at the air or at nothing ('fly-biting'), walking strangely (they kind of look like they have a string attached to their heads and walk kind of diagonal like they're being pulled along, a lot of the time) -- should be treated as though it's potentially rabid.
If you think you have been exposed to a rabid animal, including 'waking up in a room where a bat has gotten into it and there's a fucking bat in your room', please immediately go to the emergency room. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Post-exposure prophylaxis absolutely fucking sucks, it is a series of shots you'll have to get in two stages, it's done by weight, and it feels fucking nasty, but rabies is 100% fatal. I cannot stress enough how essential this is, having been through it.
To be clear, I have been through post-exposure prophylaxis for rabies. In 2005 or early 2006, I forget which exactly, @urbanprole and I woke up with a bat in our bedroom bc our apartment maintenance hadn't closed up the HVAC system after replacing filters. I shooed the bat out with a broom and it was acting normally for a bat but we didn't take any chances. (Thankfully, MK was at her dad's that weekend.)
I felt absolutely wretched the next day - the worst I've ever felt, excluding surgery and childbirth - after each series of shots. I had to get 2 sets on different days. I got 8 shots the first day, and Emet got like 13 or 15 bc she's very tall, and it's done by mass. The only thing I can think to compare it to is the depths of COVID, but without the coughing. Your immune system is Working Hard to update itself so it can recognize and fight any possible exposure.
I basically laid in bed and ached and sweated and groaned, but after it was over, I was fine.
Fewer than 20 people have ever survived rabies, and none are known to have survived without immediate post-exposure prophylaxis. Do not fuck around with this. Do not approach strange stray or wild mammals, especially without protective clothing.
Hellooooo, your local chain retail dog groomer chiming in with some input.
This is why I refuse to touch pets who do not have up to date and accurate vaccine information. Rabies is no joke and I do not fuck around with it. If you live in the USA, your pets are REQUIRED to have up to date rabies vaccination and THIS IS WHY. Do NOT fuck around with this, shut your fucking gob, and vaccinate your pets. (Yes, I've had pushback on this. Yes, I proceeded to describe in excruciating detail what rabies does and where humans have to get their shots. People should have to learn this before they adopt any animals and if they refuse they shouldn't be allowed to keep pets.)
BIG IMPORTANT INFO: if you live near a wildlife habitat and exist in a neighborhood where foxes and skunks can be seen walking around, VACCINATE YOUR PETS. Keep your cats indoors. Reinforce and upgrade your fences. No-brainer, you'd fucking think.
If your area is experiencing a lot of skunkings and your pet gets skunked, your first instinct should be to take your pet to a vet instead of a groomer for a bath to get the stink off. I am so serious, if your dog got skunked then your dog was close enough to be exposed to possible rabies. Keep an eye on your dogs outside. And. Of course. VACCINATE YOUR DOGS.
"Oh my dog only goes outside to go potty, she doesn't need vaccines" buddy it only takes one bad trip outside for your dog to end up a real-life zombie. This is the closest thing we have to a zombie virus and it is the worst thing ever. Vaccinate your pets.
Someone once asked me if, assuming we got universal healthcare, I would be okay with the rise in “healthcare tourism” where people who are sick come to our country to get their medical bills taken care of and life-saving medical treatment cheaper than in their home countries.
I was just like, yeah thats fine, I’d actually prefer it if 0 people died from preventable causes kept behind a paywall for no reason.
Y’all, these are just pink collar jobs. The reason you think there’s so many “mean girls” in these fields is because they’re all like 97% women. Of course some of them are gonna be assholes. There’s assholes everywhere.
We get it. Your job isn’t like other girls’ jobs. It’s a cool job.
it’s true that there are some incredibly cruel people in all of these professions.
it’s also true that they all suffer from chronic underpayment, overwork, lack of institutional support, and insane bureaucratic demands that would make them fail the people in their care all the time even if every single one was a saint.
While those are all “helper” professions and they very much are pink collar (and are underpaid, that’s not an incompatible idea), they’re also ones that involve power over vulnerable people’s lives. (And I’ve only encountered it as a comparison to, say, male bullies becoming cops, it’s not like men aren’t being mentioned here.)
Secretaries/administrative assistants aren’t on that list for a reason. Flight attendants aren’t on that list. Housecleaners aren’t on that list. Receptionists. Customer service representatives. Dental hygienists. The people who style hair or do nails. That’s not a list of pink collar jobs. It’s specifically (pink collar) positions where if you want to abuse people you’re relatively likely to get away with it.
It can both be true that “nurses who care for disabled people need better pay” and “nurses who care for disabled people have a lot of opportunities to abuse their power and that’s something worth talking about.”
Women aren’t immune from treating people badly because they’re women, or because women are underpaid. They’re sure not immune from specifically seeking out jobs that will allow them to be cruel without any consequences to them, if they get personal satisfaction out of being cruel.
You are trying to shut down a conversation about abuse.
dead-dyke
Shitty people are attracted to positions of power. That includes working class women!
There have been a lot of studies about hazing and abuse in nursing communities and even murder!
My mother is a nurse, her co-workers sit around laughing about the people who fall out of their wheel chairs, about the nurses who do cry when someone dies, my mother has ignored patients crying out in pain in order to drink her coffee.
My mother has intentionally let elderly patients at her nursing home die. She has abused them and she has laughed about it. She has left people suffering and has caused that suffering.
Nurses are underpaid and they are disrespected as medical professionals who aren’t a doctor. That’s true and we should talk about that, but we can not ignore the fact that violent women seek out these jobs with God Complexes and the intent to do harm.
Sure, that harm might be because they are bitter, over-worked, and disrespected. None the less, it is no different than when a male doctor causes purposeful harm to his patient.
Nurses contribute to eugenics, to patient abuse, elder abuse, and yeah even child abuse (my mother was proficient in all of them!)
Here are some important articles to read:
Nurses Eat Their Young An article about hazing and bullying among nurses. The title comes from a common saying in medical circles, the first time I heard it, it was in reference to my mother’s best friend who had poured coffee over the hands of a new nurse who had reported another nurse to a superior for abusing a patient.
"Ugh, there's no original ideas anymore, everything's already been done..." WRONG. What about those ladies from Austria singing about being possessed by the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe
